Jeju Island, often referred to as the “Hawaii of Korea,” is a popular summer destination for anyone living in South Korea. As an English teacher, I constantly heard my students and co-teachers rave about their vacations to Jeju. Intrigued by their glowing reviews and eager to experience this paradise myself, I finally planned my trip to Jeju Island for my summer vacation. Let me tell you, it did not disappoint.
The moment I arrived, I was captivated by the island’s turquoise waters and the relaxed, chill vibe. Jeju is not only famous for its breathtaking beaches but also for its stunning hikes, unique volcanic landscapes, and rich cultural heritage. From the famous Hallasan Mountain, a dormant volcano and the highest peak in South Korea, to the mystical lava tubes and pristine waterfalls, Jeju offers a plethora of natural wonders to explore.
Where We Stayed
My best friend and I booked a pension on Airbnb in the Woljeong-ri area. For those unfamiliar, a “pension” in Korea is similar to a bed and breakfast, though typically without the breakfast. Woljeong-ri was the ideal spot, offering a tranquil beach town vibe. Woljeong Beach is known for its white sand, surfing, and emerald waters. The beach is lined with quaint coffee shops and restaurants, perfect for a relaxing day by the sea. (Woljeongri Beach: https://maps.app.goo.gl/nSNAy33CwqHd2xQH7)
Spots to Visit
One of our first stops was Hamdeok Beach, a popular spot in Jeju. There are various restaurants, cafes, and shops to choose from along the beach. To the right of Hamdeok Beach, there’s an excellent hiking trail where you can see wild horses and take in breathtaking views of the island. I couldn’t fit in all the spots I wanted to visit in Jeju this time around. For my next trip, these are the top places on my must-see Jeju list:
1. Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak): This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a tuff cone crater formed by a volcanic eruption. It’s famous for its stunning sunrise views, and hiking to the top is a must for panoramic views of the island. (https://maps.app.goo.gl/fbMLbCXyNg5VirpMA)
2. Manjanggul Cave: One of the finest lava tunnels in the world, Manjanggul Cave offers an incredible underground adventure. The cave features fascinating lava formations, including the world’s largest known lava column. (https://maps.app.goo.gl/dn4xKQCaGFpLZ4hG6)
3. Jeongbang Waterfall: This is one of the few waterfalls in Asia that falls directly into the ocean. The sight of the cascading water against the backdrop of the sea is truly mesmerizing. (https://maps.app.goo.gl/eARKQ8CEB6CgbA6Z9)
Places to Eat & Cafes to Visit
During our stay, we discovered several amazing places to eat and drink. Cafe Layered (@cafelayered) quickly became our favorite. They serve the best scones I’ve had in Korea, along with a variety of delicious cakes. The cafe itself is beautiful and offers stunning views. (https://maps.app.goo.gl/G2ng9uWTSgRjjgLW6)
After indulging at Cafe Layered, we walked next door to Cafe Gongbaek (@gongbech.official). This industrial-style cafe has large robot moving mirrors and a giant inflatable lotus flower, creating a unique and artistic ambiance. And it’s owned by BTS Suga’s brother! For a refreshing treat, White Donkey Cafe is the place to go for matcha bingsu, a traditional Korean shaved ice dessert. Their serving size is huge! (https://maps.app.goo.gl/QyGXwcpU1YgnoWey9)
For dinner, I highly recommend Lee Chun-ok’s Original Mackerel Ssam Bap Woljeongi. Their braised mackerel with kimchi was delicious! (https://maps.app.goo.gl/Mp7m7qKrTwN1KVPDA)
Beach Club Experience
One of the highlights of our trip was visiting Nuva Beach (@nuvabeach). This stunning property features a pool, DJ, pool lounge couches, and cabanas. During the day, it’s a laid-back spot to relax, swim, and enjoy delicious food and drinks. By night, it transforms into a lively pool club. We had an absolute blast here!
